What is a storage server?
What do these 2 sentences mean. Please elaborate and give examples.
1) "One can also design a storage server on ther network in order to have a huge storage capacity"
2) "There are many applications available in the market which are costly and take time for installation. Computer networks resolve this issue as the software can be stored or installed on a system or a server and can be used by the different workshops"
1) You place a spare computer on your network for the sole purpose of storing files. I have one of these at my house with 4x 750GB hard drives (RAID 5) and is running on Ubuntu 9.10. The shares are based on Samba (windows shares). Any computer on the network can access the data. It's nice for storing music as all computers can easily stream different songs at will.
2) Using this file server, you can mount one of the network shares as a drive. Then, once you install software to this drive, you can launch it from any of the networked computers. You don't have to have the programs installed on every PC, which means that you aren't wasting a lot of storage space on each computer by saving the same or redundant data.
